These are some of the words that come to mind when I think about how steaming has nourished my life. This indigenous practice was introduced to me during a time when I was undergoing a lot of changes. I had just gotten my yoga certification and was in the midst of reconnecting with Caribbean spirituality and learning about my ancestry. During that time, I was in a space of needing to cleanse and restore my womb from years of neglect, lack of self love, toxic relationships and poor lifestyle choices as a teenager. I still remember sitting over a pot of herbs, saying a prayer, feeling the warmth and sensations rising into my body. I was aroused. It was the most sensual I had felt in a while. My yoni was moist and activated, like she had just gotten back from a spa day. Perhaps this was a womb sauna. The smile on my face was that of an orgasm and although many people would probably shame this type of pleasure, I knew everything I was feeling was righteous, but most importantly necessary. I knew that this pleasure was that of healing. Since then, my relationship with steaming has been on and off. I steam whenever I feel the intuitive call to do so. I walk away from every steaming session feeling more activated, renewed and in tune with my feminine softness.


Yoni steaming is a wholistic practice that consists of allowing warm, herbal infused steam to rise up into the uterus, similar to a face steam but instead for your womb. The nutrients found in each herb aid in ultimate health and rejuvenation.

Womb steaming dates back to 1800 BC. Women in almost every indigenous culture steamed to recover after childbirth, heal painful cycles and to overall rejuvenate their womb. For thousands of years women have relied on yoni steaming as a sacred practice for deep nourishment and vaginal sweetness. This is not a ‘new age’ practice, rather a practice we have disconnected from and forgotten. The rise of patriarchy removed women from many sacred and spiritual practices. Steaming has been around since ancient Egypt(KEMET), Ethiopia, West Africa and Asia. It is also heavily used in the Caribbean by traditional families in Haiti, Trinadad and Jamaica.


The energy of the womb is vast and magnificent. Our yoni is a portal that creates and sustains life, bringing new souls earthside. Memories remain stored in the womb and get passed down through generations.

You are in full connection with your womb lineage. If you do not cleanse and nourish this sacred space, you are going to pass these memories down into the wombs of your daughters.

It’s time to decolonize our womb space from generations of ongoing pain, anger and resentment that has resulted in dis-ease.

Stagnation in our uterus is usually a result of toxic relationships, poor lifestyle choices, sexually transmitted diseases, sexual/emotional abuse, negative self talk, passed down generational trauma & using unnatural vaginal washes/douches. This usually manifests into issues like: ovarian cysts, fibroids, PCOS, endometriosis, miscarriages, bladder weakness, vaginal dryness, yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, heavy/painful menstrual cycles, hormonal imbalances, lower back pain and more. Disharmony in the womb can also look like: lack of creative inspiration, feelings of guilt, insecurity, sexual dysfunction and low sex drive.

When our womb is in harmony we are able to express our creativity, our sexuality and our ideas. When our womb is in optimal health, we naturally feel empowered + authentic and channel down the Goddess wombs that came before us. The rise of patriarchy has disconnected women from their true essence but we are now collectively remembering who we are. We are reconnecting with the earth, reconnecting with the ways of our wise ancestors, herbal medicines and restoring womb health.

Cleansing Herbs:

This set of herbs are blood movers (Emmenagogue). They are especially great for anyone who has missed or late menstrual cycles (over 28 days). They help encourage blood flow and release stagnation.

Basil, Calendula, Cramp Bark, Dandelion Leaf/Root, Green Tea, Milk Thistle, Motherwort, Mugwort, Myrrh, Rose, Rosemary, Rue, Sage, Yarrow.


Disinfecting herbs:

This selection of herbs is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral. They help address vaginal dampness/discharge and are great for anyone who experiences frequent infections (BV, Yeast, UTI).

Basil, Calendula, Cedar, Chamomile, Eucalyptus, Dandelion Leaf/Root, Green Tea, Lavender, Neem, Oregano, Rosemary, Sage, St John’s Wort, Thyme.


BLOOD NOURISHING HERBS:

These herbs are blood tonics and provide the blood with nutrients such as iron and b vitamins.

Baobab, Comfrey, Dandelion Leaf, Hibiscus, Kelp, Mamaki, Moringa, Motherwort, Neem, Nettles, Oatstraw, Parsley, Red Raspberry Leaf, Watercress.


kidney nourishing herbs:

These herbs are moisturizing and support the body’s ability to stay hydrated. They work well for addressing vaginal dryness.

Ashwagandha, Calendula, Comfrey, Ginseng, Hibiscus, Lemon Balm, Mulberry, Nettles, Oatstraw, Plantain, Red Clover.


DEODORIZING/DIGESTIVE SUPPORTING HERBS:

This herbal selection is great for removing odor and also helps support the digestive system by circulating Qi energy.

Bay Leaf, Cedar, Citrus Leaf/Peel, Lavender, Lemon Balm, Lemongrass, Lemon Verbana, Mint, Rue.


cooling herbs:

These herbs moisturize and clear heat. Good for anyone who experiences excess heat, night sweats or lives in hot climate.

Ashwagandha, Calendula, Citrus Leaf, Comfrey, Cornsilk, Dandelion Leaf, Hibiscus, Lemongrass, Lemon Verbana, Marshmallow Root, Milk Thistle, Mint, Motherwort, Mulberry, Neem, Nettles, Oatstraw, Plantain, Red Clover, Shepard’s Purse, Slippery Elm Bark, Watercress.


Below is an herbal blend created as a demonstration of how much herbs should be used for one steam session.


1 teaspoon of motherwort

1 teaspoon of lemon balm

1 teaspoon of rose petals

1 teaspoon of orange peel

1 teaspoon of peppermint

1/2 teaspoon of hibiscus

1/2 teaspoon of rosemary

be sure to use herbs that are 100% organic if possible to avoid pesticides.

If you do not have herbs, you can steam with a piece of orange
peel, grapefruit peel or lemon peel. Apple cider vinegar diluted in water is also a good alternative.

If you do not have anything to steam with, warm water alone is just fine and still very beneficial to the womb.

I would advise to not use more than 2 teaspoons of any one herb during a steam session. Start with a small amount of your herbal choice and see how that feels for you.

Remember, intuition is key throughout this entire process. only you know what is best for you!


how to steam


Steep 1-2 tablespoons of herbs in about 3 cups of boiling water.

Allow the water to cool down for 20-30 minutes for a comfortable warm steam (the steam should not burn or be painful).

Remove all clothes from the waist down then squat or sit over the pot for 10-20 minutes (first time steamers should start with an 11 minute session to see how their body responds). Steaming for over an hour is unnecessary and could be dangerous. Remember, less is more!

Wrap a blanket or scarf around your waist to keep steam from escaping.

Set your intentions, take slow deep breaths and connect to the spirit of your womb.



If you do not have a steaming chair, you can create a comfortable steaming station on the floor. This method works perfectly fine and is just as effective. Be sure to support your knees with cushion and have pillows around for extra comfort.


Steaming side effects


After a steaming session, many things can happen. Every vessel is unique and expresses itself differently. There are some common things that can take place after a steaming session but please know that they are normal and usually just a result of your womb cleansing itself.

Emotional Release – energy coming up to the surface that needs to be expressed.

Brown Discharge – a sign of old residue exiting the uterus.

Increased Blood Clots – your next menstruation after your steam session may have increased blood clots, this is due to old residue being released.

Cramps & Vaginal Discharge/Odor – the womb is decongesting and releasing mucus

Bowel Movements or Gas – The colon is also benefiting + cleansing from your steaming session

Sexual Arousal – heightened libido after womb steaming is due to circulation and warmth

  • If you experience bumps or a rash after steaming, this could be due to an herb in the blend. Work with each herb one at a time to see how they effect you individually.
  • If you experience heavy bleeding after a steam session, get as much rest as possible and do not steam for a few weeks.

This is the ultimate guide to womb steaming. Remember, this practice is indigenous and intuitive. You may feel lost or confused throughout at first, it may also get messy but I promise it only gets easier as you establish your relationship with yoni steaming. Your womb will thank you!
